The mining railways
The 300 kilometers of railways put in place by the Río tinto Company Limited started to be built in 1873 and were operational till 1984. The railways were at the time seen as a symbol of the industrial revolution and of progress in the region. The Río tinto Foundation ha recuperated 12 kilometers of railway, two tank engines and wagons which are now in operation and can be used to enjoy amazing landscapes such as the old industrial pole and natural areas along the Río Tinto river.
Peña de Hierro
The history of this mine dates back to the Roman era, although its most intensive exploitation took place from the end of the XIXth century. La Peña de Hierro is one of the most beautiful landscape in the region. Visitors accompanied by specialised guides will be able to contemplate the wild landscape, to visit an authentic underground gallery 200 meters long, and to discover the source of the Río Tinto river and to know the place where the C.A.B. and the NASA undertake their research for the MARTE project.
Museo Minero
Located in the former British hospital for the employees of the Río Tinto Company Limited, the museum proposes an environmental, geological and historical journey in the region. The museum displays numerous objects related to mining and metallurgy, and other pieces of industrial archeology as
emblematic as the Maharaja wagon, the most luxurious narrow wagon in the world, built for the Queen Victoria and brought to Rio Tinto during a visit of Alfonso XIII.
Casa 21
One of the Victorian houses that the company built for British workers remains well preserved and open to the public. The House 21 of the Bellavista neighborhood provides the opportunity to make a trip back to the Victorian times, and feel the atmosphere of the time, and to discover how and why this
neighborhood was built, and to discover the daily life of this place for 84 years.
